Van Living, a Dream or a Nightmare. Insurance can be the key!

Van living sounds like a dream. For some it truly is and more. However, preparedness is something that can not be stressed enough. It sounds easy, acquire a van build it out or have somebody customize it for you, hop in the van and leave. If it sounds too good to be true it is.

Let’s say you have your van and you’r ready to hit the road. You need to keep in mind Insurance is very important and sometimes hard to find. The proper insurance with your new mini home on wheels is no longer just a daily driver. It would be prudent to get third party insurance just like a motor home.

Theresa learned that the hard way. She had sold her condo and made sure she dotted every I and crossed every T. Now she was ready to hit the road. She had been living on the road for 3 months, making her way from Virginia to Colorado and basking in every state. She was on her way to California and life was amazing. She had money in the bank and had a few months to realize what she wanted to do from there. She was making friends and influencing people with her daily blog she had begun, originally just for fun and then it became more like a diary keepsake she shared with “friends”. One day she was on her way out of Colorado it had been raining and very slick and two people in front of her had gotten into an accident. She managed to avoid them but 12 cars behind her one by one and in a domino effect begin hitting one another. She was the front runner and endured a lot of damage.

She hadn’t been too worried about it at the time as she was ok. Unfortunately, her insurance was not the proper insurance and Theresa was faced with a large deductible and that was only for body and car damage. Her home inside was destroyed and now she was faced with no daily driver but also homelessness. She was far from her home town of  Arlington Virginia. Even still she had given up all of her belongings when she sold her condo. I would love to tell you that the story ended in an amazing and epic underdog fashion but this tale is a lesson. Theresa is not the only person who was living this dream when suddenly it became a tragedy there are countless stories much like hers.

There are silver linings and your story doesn’t have to be this way.  With the proper insurance and starting off on the right foot, van life CAN be a dream. We at Nomad RVs want you to live this lifestyle in the dream that we should all be able to make a reality. In order to achieve this and make it sustainable you need the right tools.
